Richmond has two schools of DJs. There are the purists who DJ only vinyl and spend hours and hours scouring the local record stores looking for the perfect items to play. Then there are the dance party DJs who use laptops and beat-matching to really keep the music going and have no breaks between songs.
I sit somewhere in the middle. I don’t use vinyl and I don’t use a laptop. I’m like some weird wedding DJ/college radio DJ hybrid mess. It’s a little ridiculous. I’m sure Richmond’s DJ community either a) has no idea who I am or b) thinks I’m laughable. I’m totally okay with this because I have no interest in looking cool and I only really care about people dancing and having a good time. I don’t have the money or interest in starting a massive DJ vinyl collection this late in life and I am really not super concerned with beat-matching and technical prowess. Generally if one song flows well into the other and people are dancing and having a great time, that’s good enough for me.
ALL THAT SAID, I think it’s safe to say I’d be willing to invest in the technology in the video above. Because HOLY SHIT IT LOOKS SO COOL.
