CIVIL WAR BADASS ALERT: JOSHUA CHAMBERLAIN
it’s appropriate that we talk about joshua chamberlain today on the 147th anniversary of his brave deeds at the battle of gettysburg.
it was the second day of the battle of gettysburg and chamberlain and his men of the 20th maine found themselves on the far left flank of the union line, on a hill known as little round top.
the confederates had been attacking repeatedly for most of the day and not only were chamberlain’s men taking significant losses, but more importantly, they were nearly completely out of ammunition.
realizing the decision ahead of him, chamberlain, a man who used to be a professor and had only been an officer for a year, with little military experience under his belt, did something dramatic.  he performed a maneuver that he had never been taught, nor had his men ever been trained to do.  he ordered his men to fix bayonets and charge down the hill in a sweeping maneuver of their battle line, creating an effect like that of a door swinging shut.
the manuever both simultaneously attacked the confederates from the front and flank.  it took them off guard and the confederate force was soon overwhelmed, but not after a fierce fight of hand-to-hand combat with chamberlain’s men.
had chamberlain not done what he did, and allowed the union army to be flanked, the outcome of the battle would have surely been different.  as this was a turning point in the whole war, one can only imagine how things could have gone differently had chamberlain not took decisive action.
he was awarded the congressional medal of honor at the end of the war.
so basically, what i’m saying is.. if the mustache wasn’t enough to convince you, joshua chamberlain was a TOTAL BADASS.
