between bob mcdonnell and ken cucinnelli, virginia’s republicans in power are giving me a whole lot to be fiesty about lately.

this latest one is something near and dear to my heart.  as you all know, i’m a huge civil war history buff.  i’m fascinated with both sides, union and confederate, as the story of the battles and the personalities of the generals were fascinating on both sides.  but everything has to be viewed in its proper context.  the war and slavery are so closely intertwined that it must be considered and talked about.  you can’t isolate the generals and the battles and not also analyze the social fabric of society at the time.

even as someone who is deeply interested in confederate history, this move just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

it should be “civil war history month”.  there is absolutely NO MENTION of slavery in the proclamation on the governor’s website which is just egregious and divisive.

i’m all for studying and learning more about confederate history.  it’s absolutely fascinating.  but this just reeks of republican neo-confederate bullshit.
