one of the most startling things that i saw in iceland were the giant glaciers that literally sat atop giant mountain ranges there.  the first one i saw was mýrdalsjökull on the southern tip of iceland.  it was such an unfamiliar sight and so vast that at first it didn’t even register that there was a giant mound of ice above the large peaks.
every once in a while, there were spots where the glacier was slowly crawling down into the valley and it’s an incredible thing to see.  ice that is literally thousands of years old slowly making its way down.  at some points you could actually hike up to the ice and crawl around on the glacier, but clayton and i didn’t have the time and we were told it was pretty unsafe to do without a guide.  i think that was my one regret about our iceland trip… that i didn’t get to actually stand on one and hear the creaking sounds of the ice below.  it’s an incredible sound.
i don’t know where this glacier photo was taken, but it just reminded me of my trip and i decided to wax nostalgic here on the blog.
next time, iceland.  next time.
