According to an article at cnn.com:
James Cameron’s completely immersive spectacle “Avatar” may have been a little too real for some fans who say they have experienced depression and suicidal thoughts after seeing the film because they long to enjoy the beauty of the alien world Pandora.
On the fan forum site “Avatar Forums,” a topic thread entitled “Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible,” has received more than 1,000 posts from people experiencing depression and fans trying to help them cope.
As I read the article, I found myself thinking back to a time only 200 years ago when people felt lucky to have survived winter. It was a fucking accomplishment. And if winter didn’t kill you, you had to worry about shit like smallpox.
I am obviously not a proponent of suicide, but if these people are having trouble dealing with the fact that they don’t live in a lush 3-D world with blue people and flying dragons, then I say let’s just hurry it up and make some space for people equipped to deal with modern life.
