Michael C. Hall has been cast to play Ulysses S. Grant in a forthcoming eight-part Civil War mini-series entitled To Appomattox on HBO. Production is set to begin this spring and an air date will be announced later in 2011. Michael is expected to start filming sometime during the Dexter hiatus until Dexter starts filming again in May.

Okay, so forget everything I said about the post-Civil War AMC show.  THIS, friends, THIS is something to truly be excited about.  I am just trying to wrap my head around one of the greatest living character actors playing the role of one of the most interesting generals of the Civil War.

As a longtime fan of Six Feet Under and Dexter, I think he’s going to nail this role.  I can’t wait to see how this mini-series develops.

I’m pretty excited that it seems as though the sesquicentennial of the Civil War is inspiring Hollywood to shift its gaze towards it a little more, which can only mean good things for appreciators of Civil War history.

Anyway, enough raving.  AWESOME!

(thanks Hugel for sending me the link!)

EDIT: I just found out via the website of the mini-series that RASCALL FLATTS is doing the music?!  And they are going to play minor roles!?  Along with Nascar drivers playing minor roles as well?  Okay - I’m officially 1000% skeptical now.  But it’s HBO.  I must keep the faith.
