races to april

  • “Who we are is only what we fight for.”

Not to make this the “my friend Robin” blog, but it’s not my fault he keeps writing shit I want to comment on.  Above you’ll see a picture of his old band, Races To April, and one of their song lyrics.  If you click above (which i recommend), you’ll find a great blog about growing older and being embarrassed of your old song lyrics.  Something I can absolutely relate to.

The histories of my first band and Robin’s band were so intertwined, it’s hard to think of them individually.  They were kindred spirits and the years we spent living in Harrisonburg together were some of my favorite times.  In a strange twist of fate, after years of playing shows together, Brand New Disaster and Races To April played both our last shows together.  I’ve always admired Robin’s musicianship and especially his lyric-writing, so while he talks shit about them on his blog, they still meant a lot to me at the time and still do.

The one line that I quoted above will always be my favorite Races To April lyric.  I saw it as a rallying cry while we all struggled to make our bands and our lives work.  We were young and full of hope, working the shittiest temp jobs and then leaving them to go on tour.  We’d come back from tour broke and hungry and start the process all over again.  I believed in what we were doing so strongly.  We really were fighting for it.

Years later, I still feel a little bit beaten up by the whole experience, but I have the most amazing memories to take with me for the rest of my life.

I’ve said for years that I’m getting that line tattooed on me.  I think it’s time to do that.
