(click to read part 1 and part 2)
(a synopsis of a future screenplay - copyright phil 2009)
The year is 2365. Robert E. Lee is still in the future.
While he is now half-man, half-robot - armed with weapons beyond the imagination of anyone living in 1865, he still has a long recovery ahead of him.
While in the hospital, the orderlies give him access to a voice-activated computer. He spends weeks studying a site called Wikipedia and begins to learn of the 500 years of history he has missed. He learns of his surrender at Appomattox, the world wars that would follow in future generations, and the civil rights movement.
As he reads the history of the U.S., he is wracked with guilt at all the human suffering that was caused because of slavery and the war.
The final straw is his discovery of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. While they fought for different sides, he had much admiration for the man. Had Abraham Lincoln survived, perhaps much suffering could have been avoided and the nation could have healed faster.
He is immediately resolved. He must return to 1865. Not to win the war, but to end the war. He must use his superweapons to command both sides to stop the violence and go home to their families. He must then go to Ford’s Theatre to stop John Wilkes Booth from assassinating Lincoln.
Lee escapes the hospital and heads back to the location of the time machine. The trip takes mere minutes, as his robotic strength enables him to travel at amazing speeds. Lee marvels at his newfound strength, assured that he will be able to end the war upon his return.
He arrives to the time machine and uses the remaining coal reserves to fire up the steam engine.
He sets the machine for March 1865 and prepares for departure.
However, at the last moment, a loud noise rips through the machine. Something has gone terribly wrong. The whole machine shakes uncontrollably and Lee loses consciousness.
He awakes to an unfamiliar world. This is not 2365, nor is it 1865. He quickly looks at the readout on the calendrome.
October 31st, 2009.
The time machine is clearly broken. The steam engine sputters out. He is a general, not an engineer - repairing the time machine himself is not an option.
“This cannot be!” he exclaims. There is so much still to do - a war to end, a president’s life to save, and a wife and children to return home to.
Trapped between two worlds, the past in which he commanded great armies, the future in which he became a superweapon. What would happen to him in this in-between world?
How would he get back to 1865?
Would he ever see his family again?
Lee walked down a Broad St. he know longer knew. Searching for answers.
Robot E. Lee was searching for a way home.
TO BE CONTINUED………?
