ICELAND: DAY 5
it’s been a little quiet over here in blogworld.
are the ridiculously long entries about my trip boring the shit out of you?
i’ll try and keep it short. not sure how successful i’ll be.
this morning we drove from jokulsarlon to myvatn. it was an all-day drive with not a lot of time for sight-seeing. not to say there wasn’t plenty of beautiful things to see, just not “famous landmark” type spots. we took a whole bunch of roadside pictures throughout the day. we spent most of the day driving through the eastfjords along a section of road that hugged the coastline. to your immediate left, giant mountains. to your immediate right, a cliff and the sea.
we stopped for lunch in a small town called egilstaddir. i had one of my favorite meals so far - a rack of icelandic lamb. it tasted phenomenal. after driving past these sheep all damn day for the past three days, it felt good to finally eat one.
i also stopped by a sporting goods store to pick up a winter hat. i somehow forgot to bring one of these. now that we’ve arrived in northern iceland, i can’t possibly emphasize more strongly how needed this hat was.
after egilstaddir, we drove through the highlands of northern iceland to myvatn. it was pretty barren country, but the drive was beautiful in its own way.
now we’re at lake myvatn. it reminds me a lot of yellowstone park, full of geological activity - fissures, steam, old volcano craters. we’ll be exploring all that tomorrow. first stop in myvatn was the nature baths. this is sort of a mini-blue lagoon where you bathe in these hot turquoise mineral waters that are heated by natural sources. it’s the most relaxing experience sitting in the hot water keeping the cold winter air at bay (currently about 33 degrees). we spent about an hour and a half in the water and then headed back to the guesthouse.
clayton and i are here at the guesthouse reading/playing on the internet and kicking back our assorted viking and gull beers. all the beers in iceland are tallboys. and at 5% alcohol, they are no joke!
off to bed in a few minutes. more tomorrow!
