fairweather - i dread the time when your mouth begins to call me hunter

last night SEAS played in richmond.  it was a show i put together for them and it went incredibly well.  we had a really great turnout for a monday night and the bar was packed like it was a weekend.  in a subtle way, it was sort of a coming out party for my new record label and introducing SEAS to a lot of people who heard the news, but hadn’t seen them live yet.

SEAS played an amazing set and i think the crowd responded really well.  it goes without saying that it makes my job immensely easier to promote and work with a band that just so happens to be really fucking good.

ben surprised me with a phone call before they arrived and asked if i wanted to join them for a song.  having been away from olympia for over a year now, it’s such a good feeling to play with peter and shane again, and of course with ben as well.  when i asked them what song, ben told me “hunter”.

i won’t go into years of backstory of my musical past here, but everyone playing last night used to be in the band fairweather, one of my favorite bands of my youth.  long before i became friends with the dudes, and years before i joined olympia, i loved their music and still do to this day.  of all the fairweather songs, one of my favorites was “i dread the time when your mouth begins to call me hunter” off of their album lusitania.  it turns out they had practiced the song a few times earlier in the evening and worked out a stripped down version.

near the end of the set, i joined the guys and sang the song (remembering almost all the lyrics!) and it was just this really surreal moment.  i’ve been friends with these guys for so many years that sometimes i forget how much of an influence their old band had on me as a musician.

without waxing nostalgic for a few more pages, i’ll just say that it was a really great night in so many ways.  i came home from the show happy about music, happy about my friends, and happy about life.

i could use nights like these more often.
