wheniwascruel reminded me to make this post. away we go is the new movie coming out starring john krasinski and maya rudolph. it’s a story of a couple in their late 20s/early 30s having a child for the first time traveling across the country searching for the perfect place to call their “home”.
when i saw this trailer, i thought to myself “i’m in my late 20s. i’ll be having kids in the next 5-10 years. i want to find my ‘home’. i can totally relate to this movie! plus it has a great soundtrack!”
AND THEN.. i felt the strange deja vu that i’ve been here before…
the formula seemed so familiar to me. like it was a movie i’d already seen even though it hadn’t even come out yet. suddenly, i remembered movies like this have been growing up right along with me the WHOLE TIME.
in 2004, when i was 23, garden state chronicled the abject terror of getting out of college / growing up / falling in love / finding your life’s purpose. and it had a great soundtrack.
in 1998, when i was 18, can’t hardly wait chronicled the excitement and fear of leaving home / growing up / and telling the girl you’ve had a crush on all during high school that you’re madly in love with her. it’s soundtrack wasn’t exactly memorable, but then again, neither were my high school years.
in 1995, when i was 15, clueless chronicled.. well.. how hot alicia silverstone is. but also it was the ULTIMATE “high school is awesome” coming-of-age movie at the time and for many years to follow. the soundtrack? also awesome.
so will movies continue this trend? in 10 years will someone right that perfect “late 30’s” movie? i suppose so. i anxiously look forward to it. i hope it has a good soundtrack.
