so last night i went to a new bar for the first time. as you may already know, i was previously a creature of habit in richmond and i am now trying to expand my richmond horizons. this includes new bars and new chill spots. last night it was adam’s birthday, so i drove up to the new patrick henry pub (formerly a cappella’s) and checked it out.
first off, historical references are key. i support this bar from the get go on name alone. the vibe inside is a little “let’s see if we can fit a bar inside this living room”, but it was quaint and nice. adam kicked things up a notch by wearing a birthday tuxedo. i, along with everyone in the bar, was impressed by adam’s commitment to getting fancy.
i was flying more or less solo - the only people i regularly hang out with are adam and kc, and they were busy with being birthday host & hostess. but i saw a few people i had met previously and drummed up some pretty awesome conversation about funny shows on tv that i don’t watch but should and the awesomeness of curved walls as opposed to straight regular walls.
i also had a conversation with a guy named will who right off the bat asked “so what do you do?”
what a question.
one i was not prepared to answer.
i’m used to, for years, saying “well i tour in this band and blah blah” but now it’s something like “well, i work for this marketing agency and blah blah blah”.
the next question was if i did graphic design or art, and so i tried explaining what i do in a more specific manner and the best thing i could come up with was “i’m the guy that the client calls when they want to make the logo bigger. and then i call the graphic design people and tell THEM to make the logo bigger. then THEY make the logo bigger and then i send that back to the client.”
“i make logos bigger” is a way better way to say “i act as a liaison between the client and our creative department”.
i quickly threw in “one time my work paid for me to go to a NASCAR race” which quickly changed the subject to the intensely more exciting topic of racing cars in circles.
so yeah, anyway. i gotta go. the logos wait for no man. back to work.
